When Autumn Garibay was looking for the perfect school after she graduated from The Christian Academy in Brookhaven, she found plenty of great options.
“But none held a candle to Shippensburg,” Garibay said.
Garibay settled into the Mathematics, Applied Math Concentration, B.S. and the Art Minor programs. She says the former has prepared her to solve problems, while the latter has allowed her to do so creatively.
“Ship faculty have been invaluable in getting me through my college career and preparing me for what is next. My incredible advisor, Dr. James Hamblin, directed me through selections of courses and concentrations so I could study my desired interests and even graduate a semester early,” Garibay said. “I was able to assist Drs. Choi and Melara with applied calculus, which kept my math skills sharp and gave me some valuable professional experience.”
Garibay also gained professional experience as an intern with Electronic Tax Systems, Inc and through seminars, conferences and other activities offered by the Mathematics Department. She recommends learning as much as possible inside and outside the classroom to anyone interested in studying mathematics at Ship.
“Classes for math majors will be difficult, but the professors are very kind and competent, so frequent their office hours. Some may even give extra credit for attending Mathematics Department events,” Garibay said.
Outside the classroom, Garibay has enjoyed serving as a worship leader for FUSE and an epee coach for the Fencing Club.
