Hannah Pollock is in Shippensburg University’s Communication/Journalism, Print and Online Media Concentration, B.A. degree program. She serves as the editor-in-chief for Ship’s student-run newspaper, The Slate.
“Other colleges and universities I looked into did not offer this type of opportunity until I reached my junior or senior years,” Pollock said.
A member of Ship’s class of 2021, Pollock has worked her way up in the news outlet. She started as a staff writer before going on to become assistant news editor, news editor and managing editor, all prior to her current gig.
“Finding an organization where you can develop your skills before you graduate is so important. Employers often ask for one to three years of experience, but, as a newly graduated adult, where do you get that experience? Student media. I have learned so much from working at The Slate and now have the work and experience to show to future employers before I graduate. I have also made some great friendships and professional connections along the way,” Pollock said.
That experience has already paid off for Pollock. She received an honorable mention for the 2020 Student Keystone Press Awards and the university’s Mark Lipper Journalism Scholarship.
“My relationship with SU faculty members enhances my educational experience. Dr. Michael Drager serves as my academic adviser and the adviser of The Slate. He puts his students first and is always willing to help them. Dr. Drager spends countless hours guiding Slaters in production of our paper. He has a passion for journalism – a passion he tries to instill in every student who steps into his classroom. I am so grateful for his mentorship. Without Dr. Drager, I would not be the journalist I am today,” Pollock said.
In addition to her duties with The Slate, Pollock has gained hands-on experience through internships with The Gettysburg Times and PennLive.
Pollock is a graduate of Solanco High School.
She is minoring in political science.
