Kyrsten Mahoney, senior marketing major, and Nishi Natalia, senior biology major, will represent the Wood Honors College at the 2020 National Collegiate Council Conference presenting their service-learning experiences from the Dominican Republic.
The National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) is the national professional organization of honors programs and colleges. The NCHC Conference brings together approximately 2000 honors students, faculty, and administrators from around the world. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s conference will feature a series of virtual events and presentations in October and November.
Mahoney and Natalia will share lessons from their four years of work with Reach Out, a Woods Honors College service-learning project that connects school-age students in low-income families in the Dominican Republic with necessary supplies and curriculum.
“All of the work we have done as an organization has been to sustain this partnership, and I am so happy that we get to share the lessons we have learned with other Honors programs and colleges,” said Nishi, a Shippensburg Area High School graduate.
Mahoney, a Souderton Area High School graduate, is looking forward to sharing her story and for the learning opportunity as a presenter at the 2020 National Collegiate Council Conference. Preparing for the conference has already given both students valuable experience.
“I think this opportunity has helped me learn new things about the presenting process. I learned more about how to brainstorm a presentation topic, the process to create a PowerPoint, and skills on actually presenting it,” Mahoney explained.
