Latino flags and colorful streamers were a feast for the eyes as students gathered to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an annual cookout at the Hockey Rink Pavilion.

Brenda Aristy, senior president of the Latino Student Organization (LSO), part of Multicultural Student Affairs, spoke at the socially-distanced event and thanked everyone for their support. Another LSO member, graduate student Ramses Ovalles, Aristy, and Aristy’s mother prepared traditional Latino dishes for the event. Aristy, a political science major, hails from Mechanicsburg Area Senior HS, while Ovalles, who is working on his MS in organizational development & leadership, came to Ship from Reading Area Senior HS.

Food served consisting of empanadas (beef, chicken and cheese), yellow rice, pulled pork, ensalada de papa (potato salad) and rice and beans.

Dessert offered a choice between two dishes, flan (custard with caramel drizzle) and tres leche (cake made with 3 different milks).

Hispanic Heritage Month began on Tuesday, September 15 and ends on Thursday October 15, 2020. Although this cultural celebration is soon coming to an end, we must always remember that we are and always will be one campus, many cultures.
